Senators Blast EFCC Over the Arrest of Chairman of Innoson Motors, Chukwuma Innocent
On Wednesday, members of the Senate attacked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over the manner the commission went about the arrest of Chukwuma Innocent, the chairman Innoson motors who was arrested on Tuesday, December 19.
Citing order 42 & 52, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu told the Senate how officials of the EFCC invaded the house of Innocent Chukwuka over a personal transaction between him and the Guaranty Trust Bank that’s already in court while Chukwu Innocent remains in police custody.
Senator Olusola Adeyeye while speaking on the matter faulted the EFCC saying: “When injustice is fostered on any Nigerian, it is fostered on all of us. The EFCC violated sections 34, 35 and 36 of the Nigerian Constitution. What’s the business of EFCC in making arrest over civil matter.”
Senator Na’allah while blasting the EFCC accused the commission of carrying over a military mentality to this present dispensation. “There is no doubt there’s been a carry over of the military mentality that is lacking concentration. The @officialEFCC do what they like because they have the power, this is uncivilized and unhealthy.” he said.
On his part, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe argued that the EFCC is engaging in a self care package, calling the arrest an impunity.
“How can a commercial transaction between a client and his bank lead to the involvement of EFCC and his arrest. EFCC is engaging in a self care package, we must say NO to this kind of impunity.” Abaribe said.
After the debate, the Senate resolved to:
1. Intervene in the arrest of Mr. chukwuma innocent, Chairman Innoson EFCC and
2. That the Committee on anti-corruption and financial crimes investigate the matter and report to the Senate in 24 hours.
