Belfast mother who lost her vision after getting her eyeballs tattooed says she should have heeded her 7-year-old daughter’s warnings.
A law student from Belfast is now losing her sight and regrets not listening to her daughter’s seven-year-old advice that she might go blind if she got her eyeballs tattooed.
Mum-of-five Amber Luke, a model from Australia who dyed her eyeballs blue in 2019, and who became known as the “blue-eyed dragon,” served as an inspiration for Anaya Peterson.
However, Anaya, 32, wasn’t as privileged; the altered eye caused her to be hospitalized and face irreversible blindness after what was likely an allergic response to the ocular ink.
Anaya Peterson, who is currently trending on social media, had her right eye tattooed blue in July 2020. Later that year, in December, despite experiencing headaches and dry eyes as “part of the healing process,” she decided to have her left eye dyed purple.
Anaya admitted herself into the hospital’s A&E department as the swelling grew worse and worse and the recommended medications failed to lessen the “severe inflammation.”
The tat lover first received “medication delivered through a drip” for three days, and then the next day underwent an operation to biopsy the troublesome eyeball.
According to Anaya’s statement, India was never on board with the odd tattoo because she worried that her mother would “become blind,” a situation that Anaya alleges she is now facing as her vision deteriorates.
The experience has made the mom regret her decision to emulate alternative Australian Amber Luke, even though Anaya was “on the mend” when she was discharged from the hospital after the surgery.
According to ophthalmologists, Anaya has a very high chance of developing glaucoma and her eyesight is already becoming worse. She claims that “hundreds of thousands of floaters” are obstructing her vision.
The law student at the Open University states that her school is helping her and giving her resources like reading aids and counseling in addition to assistance. Anaya insists that the negative feedback she gets online regarding her alternate appearance is normal and that she is choosing to be optimistic.
