Nigerian politician succumbs to heart failure and cancer complications after months of declining health
London/Lagos โ Willie Obiano, who served as Governor of Anambra State from 2014 to 2022, has died in a London hospital following complications from severe heart failure and urinary cancer. He was 69.
The former governor passed away after receiving intensive care, with sources close to the family confirming his condition had deteriorated rapidly in recent days despite aggressive medical intervention.
A Fighter to the End
Medical sources indicated that Obiano’s health had been declining over several months, though the severity of his condition was not widely known publicly. His final hours were marked by a determined struggle, with those present describing his resolve in the face of mounting medical complications.
“He fought till the very last moment,” said a source familiar with the situation, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the circumstances.
Political Legacy in Nigeria’s Southeast
Obiano’s tenure as Anambra’s fourth democratically elected governor spanned two terms, during which he implemented policies focused on security, infrastructure development, and economic growth in the southeastern Nigerian state.
His administration was noted for maintaining relative security in Anambra during a period when neighboring states faced significant challenges. He also championed agricultural initiatives and attracted investment to the commercial hub of Onitsha and the state capital, Awka.
From Banking to Politics
Before entering politics, Obiano enjoyed a successful career in banking and financial management, working with institutions including Fidelity Bank, where he rose to senior management positions.
His transition to politics came when he was selected as running mate to then-Governor Peter Obi in 2010, though he did not serve in that capacity. He later won the governorship election in 2013 under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Controversy and Legal Challenges
Obiano’s post-gubernatorial period was marked by legal difficulties. Shortly after handing over power to his successor, Professor Charles Soludo, in March 2022, he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at Lagos airport while attempting to travel abroad.
The anti-corruption agency had been investigating allegations of financial mismanagement during his administration, charges which Obiano consistently denied.
Reaction and Tributes
As news of his death spread, tributes began flowing from political figures across Nigeria’s southeast region and beyond. Official statements from the Anambra State Government and his family are expected in the coming hours.
Obiano is survived by his wife, Ebelechukwu Obiano, and children.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
