Bret Baier:
Madam Vice President, thank you for the time.

Kamala Harris:
Thank you. It’s good to be with you, Bret.

Bret Baier:
Voters all over the country, and especially here in Pennsylvania, tell pollsters that immigration is a key issue in this election, specifically the influx of illegal immigrants from more than 150 countries. How many illegal immigrants would you estimate your administration has released into the country over the last three and a half years?

Kamala Harris:
I’m glad you raised the issue of immigration because I agree, it’s a topic people want to discuss. But before I answer, I want to make one thing clear—

Bret Baier:
Do you have a number? One million? Three million?

Kamala Harris:
Bret, let’s get to the point here. We have a broken immigration system that needs to be fixed.

Bret Baier:
Your Homeland Security Secretary said that 85% of apprehensions—

Kamala Harris:
I’m not finished. We have around 6 million people who have been released into the country. Let me just finish, and I’ll get to your question.

Bret Baier:
Please, go ahead.

Kamala Harris:
When we came into office, we immediately reversed many of the Trump-era border policies. Most significantly, we changed the policy that required illegal immigrants to be detained through deportation either in the U.S. or Mexico. Under our administration, they were released from custody awaiting trial. Some of those released were adult men, some of whom committed crimes.

Looking back, do I regret the decision to terminate “Remain in Mexico” at the start of our administration? No. We recognized from the start that we needed to fix the immigration system.

Bret Baier:
Yes, ma’am. It was called the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021, which aimed to provide a pathway to citizenship. But the White House, the House, and the Senate—all under Democratic control—didn’t bring it up for a vote.

Kamala Harris:
Let me finish responding, please. We knew from day one that immigration was a priority. Our administration has focused on fixing the problem, and we’ve taken many steps, including reforming the asylum system, adding more judges, tightening penalties for illegal crossings, and addressing points of entry between official border crossings.

Bret Baier:
But—

Kamala Harris:
Let me finish. We worked on a bipartisan effort, including support from some of the most conservative members of Congress, to strengthen the border. That bill would have added 1,500 more agents, stemmed the flow of fentanyl, and put more resources into prosecuting transnational criminal organizations. These are issues I’ve worked on as Attorney General of a border state.

Bret Baier:
But Democrats voted against that bill.

Kamala Harris:
Some people were advised to oppose the bill because they preferred to campaign on the issue rather than fix it. But in this election, people want solutions, not political games. They want a president who actually focuses on solving the problem.

Bret Baier:
The bill would have allowed 1.8 million illegal immigrants into the country per year, which was a sticking point for many conservatives. More importantly, back to my original question—some of the men released early in your administration committed violent crimes. Do you owe their families an apology?

Kamala Harris:
First, let me say those are tragic cases, no question about that. I can’t imagine the pain those families have experienced. But if Congress had passed border security legislation nine months ago, we would have had more agents and resources to prevent these incidents.

Bret Baier:
It was a policy decision made at the start of your administration. Do you owe those families an apology?

Kamala Harris:
I’m deeply sorry for their loss. But I also want to be clear—there are individuals who refuse to participate in solutions. I’ve always focused on solving problems, and I believe that’s what the American people want in this election.

Bret Baier:
At one point, you said the border was secure. When did it become a crisis in your mind?

Kamala Harris:
We’ve had a broken immigration system for decades, long before the Trump administration. It’s no secret that it needs to be fixed. I’ve been to the border, spoken with agents, and they need more resources. Congress is the only body that can fix the system.

Bret Baier:
There were more than 90 executive orders rescinded in the first days of your administration, including many related to the border. The Border Patrol recently endorsed Donald Trump and said your administration has failed on border security. Why do you think they said that?

Kamala Harris:
I understand their frustration. They’re working hard, around the clock. But that bipartisan bill would have addressed many of their concerns.

Bret Baier:
In 2019, when you ran for president, you supported benefits like free tuition and healthcare for immigrants in the country illegally. Do you still support those policies?

Kamala Harris:
That was five years ago. As Vice President, I’m clear that I will follow the law, and as President, I would do the same.

Bret Baier:
But you chose Governor Tim Walz, who signed many of those things into law in Minnesota. Do you still support those policies?

Kamala Harris:
As I said, I will enforce federal law. That’s my priority.

Bret Baier:
Do you still support decriminalizing border crossings?

Kamala Harris:
No, I don’t support decriminalizing border crossings, and I haven’t done so as Vice President.

Bret Baier:
Your position has evolved. Let’s talk about your experience. You’ve prosecuted transnational criminal organizations and human trafficking. How do you plan to use that experience?

Kamala Harris:
I’ve spent a significant part of my career prosecuting those who pose a threat to the safety of the American people. As Vice President, I take this work seriously, and as President, I will continue it.
