Videos of the widely reported deaths of African migrants who tried to cross the border into Spain from Morocco over the weekend have surfaced on social media, showing the terrible scenes.

What happened:

In a clash with Moroccan and Spanish security forces on June 24, 2022, at the Melilla border wall, between 500 and 2,000 persons attempted to get into Spain in the early morning hours, and at least 37 migrants were murdered.

Videos that have been making the rounds online imply that the above figures are drastically understated.

According to the footage, which was allegedly captured on Friday, dozens upon dozens of suspected African bodies are seen stacked high in a large dirt field.

The video also demonstrates how the local officials treated the refugees in a cruel manner.

The first video that MandyNews.com was able to obtain was shared on Twitter by BasedFin, who said the following:

“Chaotic scenes at the EU’s only land border with Africa. More than 2000 of migrants, from sub-Saharan Africa, running across a field before storming the border fence. 130 migrants managed to enter Melilla. All of them men.”

Southern African Eye, which defines itself as “an independent news network,” tweeted another video that had footage of “Moroccan police in full riot gear battering migrants with rocks as they attempt to cross the Spanish border fence.”

According to the tweet, there had been “at least 87” fatalities and “many more injuries.”

In another viral video, Pedro Sรกnchez, the prime minister of Spain, praised the “amazing work” being done to confront what he called “an attack on the territorial integrity of our nation” despite the horrifying number of fatalities and injuries.

Authorities said that as they fled, migrants stepped on each other, setting up a stampede that claimed several lives.

According to reports, a number of further migrants also fell through the fence and onto the ground.

The Moroccan authorities said that at least 63 further migrants had been hurt, 140 Moroccan police officers had been hurt, five of them critically, and 49 Spanish Civil Guards suffered minor wounds.

Calls for a probe into the bloodshed and violent reaction to the border crossing, which the New York Times said at least 130 migrants successfully completed, are being led by the African Union.

According to a press release from the African Union Commission, Chairperson H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat “deep astonishment and worry” at the “violent and degrading treatment of African migrants trying to cross an international border from Morocco into Spain.”

According to reports, a temporary facility established by Spanish authorities was processing around 130 African refugees who had made it to Melilla.

Protests broke out all over Spain in response to the violence at the Moroccan border.

One of the two land borders between Africa and the European Union is at Melilla.

The “Melilla Massacre” is currently trending on social media as of the time of this writing.
