Nigerian football team were on International duty, which also involved Chelsea star Jon Obi Mikel and Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi, when two men claimed to be police officers confronted their convoy.
The men told the team that they were instructed to arrest Shehu Dikko, the Nigeria Football Federation’s second vice president. But when the officials asked them to show a warrant, one of the armed men got angry and opened fire. He fired several shots in the air.
A witness told the Sun: “One of the detectives pulled out his gun and threatened to shoot anyone interfering with his job.
“With tempers flaring, he repeatedly fired shots into the sky.”
The team also included Manchester City’s striker Kelechi Iheanacho and Leicester forward Ahmed Musa. They were soon loaded on the bus outside the Abuja airport and ran away from the scene.
Thankfully, no one got injured in the incident but it is believed that some of the players are shaken by this unexpected and horrific incident.
