A video of American evangelist Creflo Dollar confessing his prior tithing teachings were false has gone viral.
In the nearly two-minute video, edited from his June 26 sermon, Creflo tells the congregation he has now realized Christians are not supposed to tithe but give generously and cheerfully.
Creflo claimed that because of the sermon at his Christian World Changers Church International, he is aware that his friends will be unhappy with him.
A number of people, including bloggers, posted the video on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, where it has already received over a million views.
“I want to start off by saying to you that I’m still growing and that the teachings that I’ve shared in times past on the subject of tithing were not correct and today I stand in humility to correct some things that I’ve taught for years and believed for years but could never understand clearly because I had not yet been confronted with the gospel of grace, which has made the difference,” Creflo said.
“I won’t apologize because if it wasn’t for me going down that route, I would have never ended up where I am right now. I will say that I have no shame at all at saying to you to throw away every book, every tape and every video I ever did on the subject of tithing unless it lines up with this. I’ve done some corrective teaching in the last 10 years but not to the degree of what we’re getting ready to do now.
“So why is this important? Because religion is sustained by two factors: fear and guilt, and if there’s one subject that the church has used for a long time to keep people in fear and guilt, it’s that of tithing. It has to be corrected now or I may lose some friends, preachers may never invite me again, but I think I’ve already been through that, so go with me,” Dollar added.
Tithing, according to Dollar, the founder of Arrow Records, Creflo Dollar Ministries, and the Creflo Dollar Ministerial Association (formerly known as International Covenant Ministries), is an old testament practice.
“Literally, you are not living and are not conducting your life under the mosaic law, of which tithing is a part. You have been completely set free from living under that dispensation since Jesus rose from the dead. You are under grace. You live according to grace. You live according to what Jesus has done. You live according to that new and living way. He says sin is no longer you. Tithing is an old testament concept, and I’m going to demonstrate it to you. tithe was a requirement of the law in which the Israelites were to give 10 of the crops they grew and the livestock they raised. They were supposed to give 10 percent of that to the temple or to the tabernacle,” he said.
These words were spoken at Creflo Dollar’s one-hour and 20-minute sermon on June 26, 2022, titled “Great Understanding.”
