The topic gained popularity after the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, on Sunday paid a visit to the residence of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of the Abia North Senatorial District to meet with his mother, Eunice Uzor Kalu.
During the visit, Femi Gbajabiamila, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, was with Tinubu.
In the video, Kalu, who currently sits as the Abia North Senatorial District’s representative in the national parliament, can be heard asking, “Where is Mama? Come and welcome your guest.
Let me greet you in Yoruba tradition,” says Tinubu as he bows down to touch the ground in front of the enormous “Mama Abia” and to the wide smiles of the obviously delighted Orji Kalu.
Immediately following Tinubu in saluting Orji Kalu’s mother, Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila was also visible. However, he did not lower himself as his leader appears to have done.
The video quickly went viral on social media, garnering hundreds of views, comments, and responses.
People from all walks of life in Nigeria who reacted to the APC presidential candidate’s act in Abuja over the weekend had varying opinions on the way he greeted and Kalu mother’s responses.
Even though the former governor’s supporters praised him for paying a visit to Orji Kalu’s mother in Abuja, opposition supporters claimed the deed was just a publicity stunt.
For him to prostrate himself in front of a woman who he is older than, some people even claimed, is shameful.
Aisha Yesufu wrote; “Isn’t it an abomination for the elder to bend down and greet the younger one?”
Others criticized Kalu’s mother for not showing respect by bending slightly in response to Tinubu’s gesture.
In a post on his official Twitter account regarding the visit on Sunday, Tinubu’s presidential campaign spokesman and state minister for labor and employment stated that it was a part of his attempts to unite “home fronts” before the 2023 presidential election.
