I’m sure you’re disappointed that Wizkid’s Essence didn’t win “Best Global Music Performance” at the 64th Grammy Awards.
The biggest shock of all is that one of the best albums to ever come out of Africa, “Made in Lagos,” failed to win the Grammy for Best Global Music Album.
Wizkid, a 31-year-old superstar, lost both Grammy nominations in 2022.
He lost the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Performance to Arooj Aftab’s “Mohabbat” and the Best Global Music Album to Angelique Kidjo’s “Mother Nature.”
Fans on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other social media platforms are now claiming that Grammy rigged Wizkid’s Award.
That reminds me of Nigerian politics, when the genuine candidate is out on the streets trying to persuade voters, while his opponent is using hashtags to win an election.
According to one of my favorite rappers, Late Guru, said in the opening stanza of his song above the clouds, “The righteous pay a sacrifice to get what they deserve,” everything in life has a price tag.
Let’s not waste time talking too much; you’ve come to find out why Wizkid didn’t win the Grammy Award in 2022.
Why Wizkid Did Not Win Grammy 2022
With Made in Lagos, Wizkid has already accomplished a lot and broken countless records. With over 4,100 album-equivalent sales, it debuted at number 15 on the UK Albums Chart and number 80 on the US Billboard 200 with over 10,000 album-equivalent units. The album sold an additional 17,000 units in the United States after the deluxe edition was released, peaking at number 28 on the Billboard 200.
The album has won Wizkid over 135 awards in the last year and received two Grammy nominations.
Wizkid, on the other hand, failed his first assignment to win the Grammy. Instead, he was doing PR, the same mistake Burna Boy made the first time before hooking up with P Diddy. Angelique Kidjo has never done publicity online before.
What is the first move?
According to research, making friends with the voting body, which is made up of all GRAMMY members and labels, is the first step in winning a Grammy Award. They are the ones who decide which entries will be considered for nomination. Every year, the Recording Academy receives about 20,000 albums, yet only a small percentage of those are awarded.
So the simple reason Wizkid did not win the award is that he did not go close enough to the voting body. Everyone around the globe knows he’s good and has a wonderful album, but his competitors know the shortcut.
If you doubt me, go back and study Burna Boy’s first nomination, then check out when he tweeted something like Angelique Kidjo told him, then check out what he did today. He was unbothered. He now understands the system.
Wizkid must win the next Grammy, but he shouldn’t behave like Atiku.
