Where did the cult claim come from?
It came from partisan accounts during the 2023 campaign. Dubawa traced it to a pro Peter Obi account on X that posted on 30 January 2023, with others repeating it in replies.
The posts offered no documents, testimony or other proof. Their only evidence was that the two shapes looked a little alike. Election seasons in Nigeria often bring this kind of claim about candidates from every party, and they spread fastest in WhatsApp groups where few people check.
What did fact checkers find?
Dubawa, a West African fact checking project, examined the claim and rated it false. It found that the ouroboros stands for cyclical time and eternal life, that the cap emblem has been explained by Tinubu as a broken shackle, and that nothing connects the two or suggests cult membership.
Our own check in October 2026 found nothing new: no court record, no credible report, no statement from any former member of any group, linking the emblem to a cult.
