A devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria early Monday morning, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
The death toll continues to rise, with over 1000 people reported dead and thousands injured. Amidst the rubble and chaos, there are growing concerns for the safety of former Premier League footballer, Christian Atsu.
Atsu, who currently plays for Turkish club Hatayspor, was reportedly sleeping when the earthquake struck.
Reports from Turkish outlets suggest that two players and two members of staff were “pulled out of the rubble”, but Atsu and Hatayspor’s Sporting Director, Taner Savut, remain missing. A search and rescue operation is currently underway to try and find the pair.
The Ghana international has had a successful career, playing for the likes of Chelsea, Everton, Bournemouth, and Newcastle United. He made 80 appearances in the Premier League, scoring three goals and registering six assists.
Atsu was an integral part of Newcastle’s promotion back to the Premier League in the 2016/17 season under Rafa Benitez, which resulted in a permanent move to the club.
The earthquake, which was felt by millions across Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus, and Israel, caused buildings to collapse and widespread damage.
A second 7.5 magnitude tremor, described as “not an aftershock”, occurred later in the day, 80 miles north of the first quake’s epicenter of Gaziantep.
The international community has responded to the disaster with outpourings of support and offers of aid. World leaders have pledged to send assistance to Turkey in their time of need.
As search and rescue operations continue, the footballing world remains hopeful for Atsu’s safe return. The thoughts and prayers of millions are with the people of Turkey and all those affected by this tragedy. The earthquake serves as a reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature and the importance of coming together in support of those in need.
