So, what takes place during the interview?

An officer will ask you a series of interview questions, and the number of questions you will be asked will vary depending on your answers. However, I recommend that you prepare for the interview questions that will be asked shortly. If you adhere to the advice that I give you, the questions that you ask should be kept to a minimum, which is good news.

What to do at the interview?

First and foremost, make sure you arrive at the interview location on time. Please do not be late. There will be a lot of people there waiting to be interviewed, so get there prepared and go through checklist that I’m going to share below and make sure you have all of your documentation with you to make the officer’s job as seamless as possible.

Now I understand that you will be nervous when you go there for your interview. They are used to that, but if you’re honest, personable, friendly, and polite, you will be fine. 

Maintain eye contact with the officer who is asking the questions. Be honest in your answers, but also be accommodating and don’t be defensive in any of your answers.

US visa interview questions and answers

The first thing they’ll say to you is, “Can I see your passport?” When you hand over your passport, don’t just hand it over. No problem at all. I have it ready for you. Yes, I have or no, I haven’t, but if you’re dishonest, your visa is likely to be declined, so please don’t be dishonest. Be truthful and say yes or no.

What’s the purpose of your visit to the US? What is the purpose of your trip to the United States? So, if you are visiting for personal reasons, such as vacation, visiting a tourist attraction, or visiting friends and family, or if you are visiting for business purposes, such as attending a conference state it.

So, when you respond, make sure you’re giving them the information that you know they need and don’t yet have. They’ve asked you a question, they’ve stopped talking, and they’ve given you an opportunity to speak, so now it’s your turn to convince them to put that information out there so that they can have the best information possible when they’re making that decision about your visa.

Let me give you an example. When the visa officer asks you, let’s say you’re a student, right? The visa officer asks you, “Well, what do your parents do?” Well, some visa applicants may just say “business.” This doesn’t tell the police officer anything.

This could be anything. It could be anything from selling eggs on the street to owning the country’s largest petroleum company. So, saying that your parents do business doesn’t really tell the visa officer anything about you. They don’t see you in a new light.

They don’t understand your situation any more fully. That’s a passive answer right now. An active answer would be to be an active interviewee. What does that sound like? Well, it sounds something more like this. What do your parents do? On top of that, our family owns three apartment buildings in the city, one of which we live in and the others we rent out; that apartment building is worth x amount of dollars. On top of that, my older brother started an engineering firm after graduating, and he’s currently doing design and due diligence on infrastructure projects for the government.

So that was just completely made up, but you get what I’m saying there. What you do is think, “Okay, the visa officer has asked me this question.” What do they really want to know? The visa officer asked me what my parents did. It’s not because he needs to, you know. It’s because he wants to see what my situation is here in my own country, what my family’s situation is, how stable we are, what we are. What are our financial prospects right now? So when I hear that “what do your parents do?” question, I know what I need to tell him or her on the other side of that window. I need to tell them about what my family’s finances are like now. Maybe that has to do with my parents’ jobs.

Maybe it has to do with my parents’ investments, right? Maybe it has to do with my grandparents. If they’re still the primary patriarch of the family that owns the business, there’s some information that they want, and you need to figure out what that is and give it to them. You’re an active visa applicant.

What to bring to the US visa interview

Bring some evidence of the purpose of your visit, such as an invitation letter from a friend or relative, an invitation email, a booking form for a visit to a tourist attraction, or a booking confirmation slip for you. Take a couple of these with you so that you’re not just going there and not having enough money to support yourself while you’re there. If you have money in your bank account, bring your paycheck or bank statement to prove it, or if a friend or relative is going to support you, bring a letter that says they are willing to support you during your stay.

There is no dress code, so you don’t appear to be serious. If you are a student, it’s best to dress in a formal manner. You can wear a shirt, tie, formal shoes, and keep well groomed and your facial hair well maintained. If it does not match the energy you know, so it’s best to dress in formals.

When I went to my visual interview, I just wore a shirt and tie and a formal pen, and when I came to the officer, he asked if I was a student, and I was like yes, I’m a student. He just made a guess based on my attire, so dress well when you go there, dress comfortably.

You don’t want to be too tight in your clothes because that can distract your visa officer from the interview and your answers. Don’t do that. I see people going to the interview and from my experience, I have seen people going to interviews with those dresses, like shirts, you know, shirts with those check shirts and jeans and stuff like that. They did not get visas. Not all of them. Some of them got visas, but most of them did not get the visa.
