A new virus menace known as the “zombie virus” has been identified by French scientists since November 2022 and is currently the topic of an investigation.
Researchers from the French National Center for Scientific Research claim that the virus has been trapped beneath a frozen lake in Russia for more than 50,000 years.
The fact that the permafrost is permanently melting over a huge proportion of the planet raises concerns about the emergence of a new epidemic.
The now-trending new viruses raise questions like, “how does the zombie virus spread?” Will the zombie viruses spread across the world? Are there things you should do now to stay safe?
The research on the virus claims:
- “The situation would be much more disastrous in the case of a plant, animal, or human diseases caused by the revival of an ancient unknown virus.”
Jean-Marie Alempic of the French National Center for Scientific Research is in charge of the latest study on the zombie virus. Another finding of the investigation was the presence of 13 previously unknown viruses hibernating within the ice’s tens of thousands of layers.
What You Need To Know About Zombie Virus
What Is Zombie Viruses?
The zombie virus, also known as Pandoravirus yedoma or P. yedoma, was first discovered 48,500 years ago in the remains of hairy rhinoceroses, prehistoric horses, and mammoths that had been preserved in permafrost. In 2022, it was found.
According to information received by Mandy News, it is the most ancient virus to have been discovered in Siberia.
Researchers are now examining the potential effects of the virus on general health in light of this recent discovery. The virus’ potential to pose a grave threat to the entire world is another concern for scientists.
What researchers say about Zombie Virus
The ice releases chemicals and bacteria that were trapped there thousands of years ago, according to scientists, who went on to give details. According to microbiologist Jean-Marie Alempic, who oversaw the zombie virus study:
- “Due to climate warming, irreversibly thawing permafrost is releasing organic matter frozen for up to a million years, most of which decomposes into carbon dioxide and methane, further enhancing the greenhouse effect.”
The researcher has also cautioned health practitioners on the ten-year gap in information on “living” viruses in the permafrost.
It’s important to note that this virus has also been discovered in a Siberian wolf’s intestines and in the fur of a mammoth.
There have been more recent discoveries of zombie viruses in addition to the one that was identified under the lake in Yukechi Alas, Yakutia, Russia. This has become a common occurrence in particular because of the consequences of climate change and rising global temperatures.
These discoveries are so frequent that in 2014 the same researcher found a zombie virus that was 30,000 years old trapped in another permafrost. The scientists had at the time established that it was still capable of infecting animals.
