From the day Godwin Obaseki wins Edo APC governorship ticket. Sunday, June 19, 2016, I was sceptical. He was not known in Edo state, He wasn’t a political person, and very not smart like his predecessor Adams Oshiomole.

He was declared the winner of 319483 votes out of 613,244 votes cast.

A lot has changed about him. Though no matter what you do not everyone will like you, his performance has surprised me.

I’ve lived in Edo for the last 3 years. I’ve heard lots of perspectives on Obaseki, and I’ve kept a close eye on the media. I’ve explored the 18 local government of the state, visited the major city, and I even got to see Obaseki speak at Edo festival.

For a whole range of reasons, I’m now convinced that Governor Obaseki will win a second term. Federal might or not, here are 10 reasons we almost certain he’ll be re-elected in 2020.

1. Edo State Economy

It’s hard to deny that the Edo State economy is great. Under Obaseki, and unemployment the lowest it’s been since 90s.

2. The Citizens Vote

Obaseki won the 2016 election with 52% of the vote to PDP candidate Ize-Iyamu’s 41%. He wasn’t popular then, however, a lot of communities are supporting him in 2020 at a surprising 72%.

3. The Edo in Diaspora Vote

Thousands of Edo citizens in diaspora support Governor Obaseki because of his strong stance against politics of godfatherism in Edo state and his good work. These people have friends, family and wellwishers in Edo state they can call them to vote for Obaseki.

4. Incumbency

The modern trend in politics is that sitting Governors are re-elected. Ortom was elected governor of Benue State as a member of the All Progressives Congress in 2015 and dumped the party. He was re-elected as governor on 29 May 2019 under the People Democratic Party, PDP. Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike of the People’s Democratic Party won in 2015 with 87.77% he was reelected in 2019 after battling with federal might.

5. Promises Kept to Teachers

Teachers in the state like him and they will all vote him. Either way, he has largely changed the educational system in the state, fulfilling some 90% of the requests they put to him.

6. Gubernatorial Ticket

Obaseki was disqualified on Friday, June 14 by the APC’s screening committee after the governors visited Asiwaju Tinubu to plead that Obaseki be given the right of first refusal for the governorship ticket. Support for Obaseki flipped among voters since he bagged PDP ticket week after quitting APC.

7. Impeachment

The Edo State House of Assembly inauguration crisis over plans to impeach Godwin Obaseki by Oshiomhole’s loyalists. The 14 members-elect were sworn in and together with the three other members reportedly impeached the Speaker, Frank Okiye, and elected Mr Victor Edoror, as his successor. They mobilized for the impeachment of Obaseki but the move failed and gave Obaseki hundreds of new supporters.

8. The Polls

The polls more generally are picking up for Obaseki. Overall, his approval rating has been high.

Now that the APC and Oshiomole loyalists have failed many attempts to bring down Obaseki, we have seen Obaseki’s approval rating spike to 72%, which puts him well within striking range of re-election.

9. Edo First

Obaseki has surprised many— by ending agberoism in Edo state.

Obaseki administration market women, drivers, pensioners, students are happy. Governor Godwin Obaseki has sworn to annihilate the long overdue problem of unemployment in the state. This has not just put a smile on the citizens of the state but has promised a brighter and more rewarding future for the youths of the state.

10. People Democratic Party Candidates

Perhaps the biggest boost for Obaseki’s re-election prospects the People Democratic Party platform.

Since Obaseki dump APC to PDP, over 300,000 citizens have followed him to the party. Now that the field has thinned out, the most popular are the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, and the Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Frank Okiye.
