Ahmedabad — A tragic air disaster unfolded this morning as Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed just moments after taking off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The plane, which was en route to London Gatwick, lost contact with air traffic control seconds after departure and crashed into the doctors’ hostel at B.J. Medical College, one of the city’s major medical institutions.
The aircraft was carrying 242 people, including 12 crew members. The Ahmedabad Police Commissioner has confirmed that there are no survivors. Rescue teams and emergency personnel remain at the scene as recovery operations continue.
According to officials, the passenger list included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian citizen, and seven from Portugal. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has confirmed the incident and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.
The Boeing 787 reportedly reached an altitude of only 625 feet before rapidly descending and crashing near the IGB Ground area of Ahmedabad. The full extent of the damage to the medical college hostel is still being assessed.
