The co-founder of the entertainment company Miramax, Harvey Weinstein has been found guilty on two sex crime charges, including sexual assault and third degree rape. A court in New York acquitted him on two counts of predatory sexual assault and first degree rape.
In October 2017, more than 80 women had made allegations against Weinstein. The allegations sparked the #MeToo social media campaign and many similar sexual abuse allegations against (and dismissals of) powerful men around the world; this phenomenon is referred to as the “Weinstein effect”.
Following sexual abuse allegations against Weinstein, he was dismissed from his company and expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
