At the age of 71, Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos state, brings his deep understanding of Nigeria’s political landscape and a track record of state-level economic revitalization to the country’s highest office. His Vice President, Kashim Shettima, is no stranger to the corridors of power, having formerly governed Borno state in the northeast.

Tinubu’s ascension to power marks the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year reign, a tenure marked by soaring commodity prices, economic instability, and widespread kidnappings. The new administration faces an uphill battle to restore economic stability and public trust.

However, the opposition party has challenged the election results in court, alleging voting irregularities.

In a recent statement, outgoing President Buhari stood firmly by the election’s credibility, declaring it free and fair.

“I assure Nigerians, the international community, and all stakeholders that this election was conducted in a transparent manner. I urge the incoming administration to build on our democratic gains.”

While the election’s legitimacy is disputed, hundreds of dignitaries from across Africa and around the world attended the inauguration, a testament to Nigeria’s regional significance.

In his previous role as the governor of Lagos, Tinubu was praised for transforming the state into a commercial powerhouse. Supporters are optimistic that Tinubu will bring the same fervor and innovation to his presidency.

The opposition, however, remains skeptical, questioning his capacity to effect national-level changes akin to those in Lagos.

Concerns over Tinubu’s health have been heightened by his two foreign trips since his election win in February. A 2021 sojourn to London for medical treatment further fuelled these concerns.

As he embarks on his presidential journey, Tinubu has the eyes of over 200 million Nigerians and the world upon him, each anticipating how he will navigate the nation through its current predicaments.
