WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, has warned the government of Madagascar over herbal tonic developed in the country and touted as a cure for COVID-19
Moeti says on Friday they ‘caution countries against adopting a product which has not been taken through tests to see its efficacy against Covid-19. Anything used should undergo a clinical trial to ensure it isn’t a risk to people’s health’.
The government of Madagascar has started exporting the herbal tonic to other African countries.
Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina unveils the herbal remedy to treat coronavirus in April and eases lockdown imposed in the country after weeks of testing on no fewer than 20 people.
In a video obtained by MandyNews, Dr Matshidiso Moeti said; “New medicines must be tested & be in line with ethical & scientific standards. We caution countries against adopting products that have not undergone rigorous clinical trials to ensure their safety & effectiveness against COVID-19. One fight.”
So far the coronavirus COVID-19 has infected over 50,000, killed 2,000 in Africa, World Health Organisation, WHO, Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti also disclosed.
