It’s a historic OBO-Day, so it only seems appropriate that we provide some facts in honor of Davido’s milestone birthday on Monday.
Davido is a Sagittarius icon who has made revolutionary contributions to Afrobeat.
This Osun Ede native has left a lasting impression on audiences all around the world through his work teaching musicians about the music business, opening the eyes of video directors (by spending a fortune on video shoots), and selling out London’s O2 arena multiple times.
Since he had his first hit song and received the next-rated honor at the Headies, some would even contend that the musician, David Adedeji Adeleke, who was born on November 21, 1992, is bigger than “all of you.”
The “Stand Strong” Omo Baba Olowo hasn’t lost his crown after a decade of chart-topping, trend-setting, and thought-provoking work, regardless of whether everything in his life and career was moving right or left.
The following are the few moments that elevated Davido to the position of king of African music:
When Skelewu was a trend: You might recall that Davido, with his Shizzi-produced single “Skelewu,” which set records, possibly had the biggest hit of the year 2013.
First Trophy: Davido released “Dami Duro,” the second single from his debut studio album Omo Baba Olowo, in 2012 and went on to win the Next Rated Award at The Headies (2012).
Sony Deal: He recorded several successful singles between 2013 and 2015, and in January 2016, he agreed to a record deal with Sony Music.
His Record Label: He started the record company Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), which has signed artists like Mayorkun, Liya, Peruzzi, and Dremo.
Davido and Sony’s RCA Records inked a record deal in July 2016. His five-track EP Son of Mercy, which included the singles “Gbagbe Oshi,” “How Long,” and “Coolest Kid in Africa,” was released in October 2016.
