In a sad event, Ecuador’s youngest mayor, Brigitte Garcia, aged 27, and her communications director, Jairo Loor, were shot and killed on Sunday in Manabi province, as confirmed by the local police.
The tragic incident happened when Garcia and Loor were found with gunshot wounds inside a rented vehicle, indicating that the attack happened from within the car.
Brigitte Garcia, a well-known member of former president Rafael Correa’s left-wing Citizen Revolution Movement party, becomes the latest political figure to be killed in Ecuador.
This sad event follows the killing of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in August last year, just two weeks before the elections. Villavicencio, known for speaking out against corruption and organized crime, tragically died while leaving a campaign event.
Similarly, in July 2023, Agustin Intriago, the mayor of Manta, was killed while inspecting a construction site, highlighting the dangerous situation faced by political figures in Ecuador.
Former president Rafael Correa and Luisa Gonzalez, the party’s presidential candidate in the recent elections, took to social media to condemn Garcia’s killing, calling it a targeted attack.
“I’ve just found out they’ve killed our fellow mayor of San Vicente Brigitte Garcia,” expressed Mr. Gonzalez on social media. “I have no words, in shock, nobody is safe in Ecuador NOBODY.”
