Annecy, a tranquil, scenic town in the French Alps was rocked to its core this Thursday, when a mass-stabbing event took place by the idyllic Lake Annecy.

A man armed with a knife attacked a group of preschool children, leaving four children and one adult injured.

According to the sources from the police, the suspect is a Syrian refugee in his early 30s, who was granted refugee status in Sweden earlier in April.

Eyewitness accounts tell of the attacker running in frenzy, seemingly targeting victims at random until being apprehended by the police.

“He wanted to attack everyone. I moved away and he lunged at an old man and woman and stabbed the old man,” said Anthony Le Tallec, a former professional footballer who was present during the attack.

Two children, believed to be around three years old, and one adult are now in critical condition. The identity of the attacker is still being confirmed, but he was not previously known to French security services.

French President, Emmanuel Macron, called the incident an “attack of absolute cowardice,” adding to the national shock. “Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the emergency services,” he posted on his Twitter account.

“We hope that the consequences of this extremely serious attack… will not send the country into mourning,” said parliament speaker Yael Braun-Pivet, underlining the gravity of the situation.

The attack triggered a nationwide wave of grief, with French MPs holding a minute of silence in the parliament, as Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne traveled to the scene of the incident.

This horrific event stirs up dark memories of past incidents in France. In 2012, a Franco-Algerian extremist, Mohamed Merah, killed seven people during a shooting rampage in Toulouse. In 2020, the beheading of a teacher in broad daylight near his school by a radicalized Chechen refugee triggered a national debate about radical Islam in the country.

This latest attack in Annecy is bound to spur further discussions about immigration and asylum policies in France. However, as investigations continue, it is crucial to remember the victims and the unity required to overcome such a tragedy, underlined in the words of Emmanuel Macron: “The nation is shocked.”
