The state funeral for the longest-serving monarch in British history, who passed away at age 96 after an impressive 70-year reign, was indeed the first of its kind since the funeral of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1965. On September 19, amidst 10 days of national mourning, the late Queen was honored by leaders and dignitaries from around the globe.
“The government’s priorities were that these events ran smoothly and with the appropriate level of dignity, while at all times ensuring the safety and security of the public,” said John Glen, chief secretary to the treasury, in a statement.
Notably, the event drew hundreds of thousands of visitors to London’s Westminster Hall, eager to pay their respects as the Queen was lying in state.

These details, along with the costs, were made public as part of a written statement to Parliament.
The late Queen, along with her husband, Prince Philip, was interred at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. It’s worth noting that Prince Philip’s funeral was a more muted affair, in compliance with social distancing measures enforced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
To contrast, the Queen Mother, who lay in state for three days back in 2002, had her funeral expenses estimated at around 5.4 million pounds. This stark difference in numbers sheds light on the evolving costs of such significant state events over the years.
