(MandyNews.com) – The Global Terrorism Index (GTI), an annual report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), has retracted its previous ranking of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as the 10th deadliest terror group in the world for 2022.

In a statement released on March 27, 2023, the GTI explained its position on the Biafra separatist group. It said that it is important to tell the difference between the group’s peaceful activities and the violence it is said to be involved in.

The statement reads, “The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is a pro-Biafra secessionist movement based in Southeast Nigeria that aims to establish an independent state of Biafra. IPOB was proscribed as a terrorist group by the Nigerian government in 2017. In recent years, IPOB has been linked to several attacks, which have been attributed to its paramilitary wing, the Eastern Security Network (IPOB-ESN). The group has not claimed responsibility for any of these attacks.”

In 2023, the GTI report, which is put out every year by the IEP, said that IPOB was the 10th most dangerous terrorist group in the world. But after looking at the data more closely and analyzing it more, the GTI has now updated its 2023 report to make the necessary changes.

Some people were skeptical about the first ranking because they didn’t know what criteria the group used to say that IPOB was the 10th deadliest terror group in the world.

According to a chart that Economic Intelligence posted on its website, IPOB killed 57 people in 40 attacks and hurt 16 others.

The GTI took away IPOB’s ranking at a time when there were worries about how terror groups are labeled and what that means for global security.

Al-Shabaab, ISK, and Jamaat Nusrat Al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM) came in second, third, and fourth, respectively, in the 2023 report as the most dangerous and deadly terrorist groups in the world.

In the chart report, IS killed 1,045 in 410 attacks, leaving 644 injured.

Al-Shabaab killed 784 people in 315 attacks and injured 1,016 others. The Islamic State-Khorasan Province (ISK) killed 498 in 141 attacks with 832 injured, while Jamaat Nusrat Al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM) killed 279 in 77 attacks with 215 injured. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) killed 233 in 30 attacks and injured 113.

The reevaluation of IPOB’s classification shows how hard it is to evaluate and rank terror groups and how important it is to have a deep understanding of the different parts and activities of these groups.

The GTI’s update and clarification of its 2023 report show that it is committed to making sure its analysis is accurate and fair, which is important for guiding global efforts and policies to fight terrorism.

The Indigenous People of Biafra have been a controversial group for a long time because they want to break away from Nigeria, and the Nigerian government calls them a terrorist group.

But the GTI’s decision to take IPOB off its list as the 10th deadliest terror group in the world shows that the group’s actions and reasons need to be looked at in more depth.

It is important to acknowledge that, while IPOB has been linked to violent incidents, the group itself has not claimed responsibility for any of the attacks.

This difference shows how hard it is to judge the actions and goals of such groups and how careful and nuanced thinking is needed to figure out how dangerous they might be.

The GTI’s decision to change its ranking of IPOB shows how important it is to accurately report and evaluate the activities of terror groups, since these classifications can have big effects on the groups involved and the policies that are put in place to deal with them.

It also shows how important it is to keep an eye on and analyze these kinds of organizations on a regular basis to make sure that any changes in their activities or strategies are taken into account in global assessments and policy decisions.

As time goes on, it will be important for organizations like the GTI and the international community to keep improving how they evaluate terror groups.

This will help make sure that global efforts to fight terrorism are based on accurate and up-to-date information.

This will allow for more effective policies and strategies to be made and put into place to deal with the threat of terrorism.
