
The total number of deaths caused by a coronavirus in the European country hits 2,978 out of 35,713 cases, the head of the Protezione Civile disaster-management agency said on Wednesday.
Italy on Wednesday reported 475 new deaths and 4,207 new cases from the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the highest single-day toll since it announced the first deaths from the outbreak.
The outbreak of the coronavirus in Italy is one of the deadliest outside China, where the disease originated.
There are currently 12.266 positive cases in Lombardy, 3.915 in Emilia-Romagna, 2.953 in Veneto, 2.187 in Piedmont, 1.476 in the Marche, 1.291 in Tuscany, 744 in Liguria, 650 in Lazio, 423 in Campania*, 416 in Friuli Venezia Giulia, 436 in the autonomous Province of Trento, 366 in the autonomous Province of Bolzano, 362 in Puglia, 267 in Sicily, 249 in Abruzzo, 241 in Umbria, 162 in the Aosta Valley, 132 in Sardinia, 126 in Calabria, 21 in Molise and 27 in Basilicata.
