New York, a city in the United States of America, is offering a $170,000 annual job to help eradicate and win the war against rats in the city.
The news first appeared on the New York Times website and has since become popular on social media.
According to the website’s report The brown rat has been a resident of New York City since just after the Revolutionary War, around. And city officials have attempted—and failed—to eradicate it for at least a century.
Because of this, New York City pushed once more on Wednesday, posting a job listing for a newly formed position of “director of rodent mitigation,” hundreds of years after the Rattus norvegicus first boarded a ship bound for New York.
In accordance with information gathered by Mandy News, the job posting, which was first made public by Gothamist, calls for a job seeker with a bachelor’s degree, five to eight years of relevant experience, and, “most importantly,” the drive, determination, and killer instinct required to combat the true enemy — New York City’s relentless rat population.
The ideal applicant, according to the advertisement, should have the “stamina and stagecraft” to overcome the battalion of rats, which are described as “cunning, voracious, and prolific.” Pay for the position ranges from $120,000 to $170,000.
A bachelor’s degree, as well as mastery of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, are prerequisites. You must also reside in New York City.
Other characteristics that are not normally connected with city workers are also required by the job description. Qualifications include a “virulent vehemence for vermin,” as well as a “swashbuckling attitude, clever humor, and general aura of badassery.”
The new position is part of a flurry of sanitation activities, which also include increased funding for rat mitigation and a plan to postpone garbage pickup (and rat meal) hours.
Additionally, in a smart marketing ploy, the Sanitation Department recently produced a $48 T-shirt that features the infamous declaration made by the division’s Commissioner Jessica Tisch: “The rats don’t govern our city. We do. NY Sanitation”
