Concerns about possible mistakes in the Abia governorship election led Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to send the Obingwa Local Government Area (LGA) Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and related materials to Abuja for more review.
A difference was found between the total number of registered voters in Obingwa and the votes given to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
This was confirmed by INEC’s Public Relations Officer (PRO). The total number of registered voters in Obingwa stands at 157,000, while only 23,000 were accredited via BVAS on March 18. However, PDP allegedly allocated a staggering 108,000 votes to itself in the LGA.
The returning officer, upon noticing the discrepancy, contacted INEC headquarters in Abuja for guidance. Subsequently, INEC suspended the Obingwa results and directed its southeast zonal office to review the situation.
INEC will look into how Obingwa’s 23,000 registered voters could have cast 108,000 votes. They will also look at how people voted in the LGA’s most recent elections.
Abia state has 17 LGAs, but INEC has only released results for 16 of them. Governor Ikpeazu’s LGA, Obingwa, is still waiting for results.
The current standings show the Labour Party (LP) leading with 172,000 votes, followed by the PDP with 78,000 votes—a difference of 94,000 votes.
Obingwa LGA INEC A collation officer in Abia State reported being brutalized by PDP thugs for refusing to allow changes to the original figures and being taken away from the collation center in Obingwa. As a result, INEC has moved the Abia state result announcement to Abuja. Outgoing Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, is also on his way to Abuja.
Many residents and political stakeholders are calling for the will of the people of Abia to be respected and not tampered with. Alex Otti, who was the most popular choice among voters, is also going to Abuja to keep a close eye on the situation.
As long as the final results from Obingwa LGA aren’t in, nobody knows who will be the next governor of Abia.
INEC’s decision to review the election results in Abuja will be closely watched by political parties, candidates, and the people of Abia State, who are eagerly awaiting the final decision in the closely contested race.
