Peter Obi’s campaign director general Doyin Okupe has resigned from his position on the campaign, the co-founder of Royal Cross Medical Centre said in a statement Tuesday.
“You will recall that I briefed you yesterday about my personal travails in seeking justice and clearing my name using the Nigerian Legal System to pursue same,” Mr Okupe said. “I have invested too much in your campaign to allow my personal travails to become a source of distraction.
In the circumstances, I have opted to step aside and plead that you appoint a new Campaign DG who can continue the assignment with zero distractions.”
With less than two months till election day, Okupe’s resignation may provide the opposition political parties with fodder for conversation over the Peter Obi campaign.
However, since the movement’s inception in the summer of 2022, this is the first prominent resignation from the top of Obi’s campaign structure.
In the coming days, Mandy News will publish the appointment of a new campaign director.
Why Did Doyin Okupe Resigns?
On December 19th, Mr. Doyin Okupe, the former Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media for former President Goodluck Jonathan, was found guilty and given a fifty-two-year prison sentence for a money laundering offense.
On Monday evening, he paid N13 million to avoid serving the full 52-year sentence he received for a N240 million money laundering offense.
As a result, many Nigerians called on Peter Obi, who had pledged to tackle corruption when elected president but whose campaign director general had been found guilty of money laundering.
In the statement he sent on Twitter, Okupe stated that he has invested a lot in Peter Obi’s presidential ambitions and that he doesn’t want to be a source of distraction and he wanted to prevent it.
Prior to the general election in 2023 in Nigeria, Okupe became a member of the Labour Party and served as the party’s vice presidential candidate and running mate while a serious contender was chosen.
