Gerard Piqué, a legendary player for FC Barcelona, has announced his retirement from the team.
The 35-year-old, who currently serves as Barcelona’s center back in La Liga, has declared that he will be hanging up his playing boots.
The ex-fiancé of Shakira has made the decision to depart before they throw him out and he makes an unexpected announcement.
In his final match for Barça, he will take the field against Almera on Saturday at Camp Nou.
He had a contract for two more years but decided to end it because he was sick of being in the spotlight.
This decision was also influenced by the fact that he was a Xavi residual player, making him the sixth center back in the team behind Araujo, Eric Garcia, Koundé, Christensen, and even Marcos Alonso.
Although Piqué is departing, he has stated that “sooner or later” he will return in his heartfelt video that he recorded to bid Barça farewell.
When he spoke those remarks, he stood in the center of a lonely, late-night Camp Nou, gazing at the box, which may have been his intended next stop before entering the confusing phase of his retirement from professional sport.
Camp Nou is abandoned by Piqué. And after making numerous round trips, he finally quits Barça, the team where he spent “25 years” of his life.
“Culers, I have to tell you one thing,” the player begins by saying in a video broadcast on his social networks to announce his surprising departure from Barcelona.
A video that begins with a story where the voices of journalists are heard asking if the great Piqué should be withdrawn or had it finished.
“Culers, I’m Gerard. Many people have been talking about me for weeks and months, but until now I haven’t said anything. Now I want to be the one to talk to you about myself,” said the center-back, who at 35 is on his way of withdrawal. “Like many of you, I’ve always been from Barça,” he recalled.
“From a very young age I didn’t want to be a footballer, I wanted to be a Barça player. Lately I’ve thought a lot about that boy, about that Gerard as a child if they had told him that he would have fulfilled all his dreams”
I hammered, player of the Barça
“I was born into a very footballing family and very culé. From a very young age I did not want to be a footballer, I wanted to be a Barça player. Lately I have thought a lot about that boy, about that Gerard as a child if they had told him that he would have fulfilled all his dreams”, He recalled in allusion to the fact that he reached Barça’s first team and won “all the possible titles”.
At this point, and after being “European and world champion playing alongside the best footballers in history and being one of the captains”, he has chosen to leave.
He leaves before they force him to leave. He leaves as he wanted, perhaps days before the club definitively opened the door to him from Camp Nou.
He had a contract until 2024, but he did not want to take refuge in that document. He has preferred to leave earlier. Leave Barca. And he leaves, of course, football. “25 years ago I joined Barça, I left and came back. Football has given me everything, Barça has given me everything. You, culers, have given me everything”, indicated one of the team’s captains.
“I was born into a very footballing family and very culé. From a very young age I did not want to be a footballer, I wanted to be a Barça player,” said the defender, who is retiring at 35 years of age. In a surprising way because he does it in the middle of the season, something totally unusual, and by his own decision, despite the fact that the club welcomed his departure to get rid of his salary, the highest in Template.
“I have always said that after Barça there would be no other team. And so it will be. This Saturday will be my last game at the Camp Nou”
“Now that the dreams of that child have come true, I want to tell you that I have decided that it is time to close this circle” is heard as one of Piqué’s last messages as he enters a silent and dark Camp Nou, the temple where he has played since 2008 when he was recruited by Txiki Begiristain from Manchester United for five million euros.
“You already know me, sooner or later, I’ll be back”
“I have always said that after Barça there would be no other team. And so it will be. This Saturday will be my last game at the Camp Nou. I will become one more culé, I will cheer on the team and I will transmit my love for Barça to my children as like my family did with me. You already know me, sooner or later, I’ll be back. See you at the Camp Nou. See Barça always!”
