It’s no secret that fans of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, two of the greatest footballers of our generation, enjoy a bit of friendly rivalry. But as news broke of Lionel Messi’s move to Inter Miami at the age of 35, Ronaldo fans wasted no time turning to social media to compare their idol’s career trajectory with that of Messi’s.

The catalyst was a tweet from a user named ‘UTDTrey’, known for his support of Manchester United and Ronaldo. He tweeted:

“My GOAT at 35. Your GOAT at 35.”

Accompanying the tweet were two images – one of Ronaldo playing for Juventus and the other of Messi in an MLS jersey. The clear implication being that Ronaldo, at the same age, was playing in a more competitive league.

Further fueling the friendly fire, another Ronaldo supporter ‘cristianoxtra_’ tweeted:

“At age 35:

  • Messi joined Inter Miami.
  • Pelé played for NY Cosmos.
  • Kaka, Zidane & Ronaldo, retired.
  • Ronaldinho had no team.
  • Xavi played for Al Sadd.
  • Iniesta plays for Vissel Kobe.

Ronaldo at 35:

Best player in the world.”

The tweet came attached with pictures of Ronaldo lifting a trophy with Juventus.

Other fans jumped on the bandwagon, drawing attention to Ronaldo’s successes in his mid-thirties compared to Messi’s recent decision to move to MLS.

“At 35 Ronaldo was the 2nd top scorer of the year, just 3 goals behind Lewa.

At 36 he won Euros & Serie A Golden Boot.

At 37 he finished within the top 3 scorers of the Premier League.

1 fugazzi World Cup isn’t going to change anything, THE GREATEST 🐐”

These tweets, and the many others like them, underline the deep-seated rivalry between fans of these two footballing titans.

Despite Messi’s illustrious career and undeniable talent, his move to MLS has left him open to criticism from Ronaldo supporters who believe their ‘GOAT’ has outperformed him in the later stages of their respective careers. As Messi embarks on this new chapter with Inter Miami, only time will tell how this ongoing debate will evolve.

Despite the mockery, it’s essential to remember that both Messi and Ronaldo have had stellar careers that have left indelible marks on the world of football.

The comparisons and debates are a testament to their immense talent and the joy they’ve brought to millions of fans around the world.
