A decade ago, Wizkid did something many Nigerian Afrobeats artists have struggled to do for many years: he broke through and found an international audience.

That isn’t to say that we were barren of success before him: 2Baba, D Banj, Wande Coal, P Square and Eedris Abdulkareem all helped pave the way for that moment. But Wizkid helped put Nigeria on the map in a myriad of new, larger-scale ways, from signing a deal with Sony Music to collaborating with big rappers and R&B stars.

Over the years, Wizkid has boosted the profile of local artists like the Fire Boy, Olamide, Tems, Tiwa Savage, Omalay and Rema.

Beyond Wizkid’s Lagos, there lies an entire country of artists who are expanding what Afrobeat looks and sounds like, reshaping the subtle beat that was pioneered by Fela Kuti, a Nigerian bandleader, and instrumentalist. Musicians are now using the foundations of Afrobeat to create new and exciting sounds that reflect the diverse voices that have made Africa’s populous nation, Nigeria a multicultural hotspot.

Below, we’ve found a new voice in afrobeat— from Southern parts of Nigeria, though we recognize that there are many more talents across the country — you need to know this young man now. We’ve included some of his tracks to help as a gateway introduction to new listeners, as well as some his photos and Instagram handle.

Listen up because this guy is the future of Nigerian afrobeat.
