  • On a fateful Saturday evening, William Mokoena was making his way back home in Walkerville, located in the southern region of Johannesburg.
  • He had just departed from his cousin’s residence a short while prior, when he found himself in the midst of a terrifying encounter.
  • The route he had chosen, which is frequently traversed by pedestrians and cyclists, passed through a stretch of veld.
  • As he was walking, he heard a growl and before he knew it, a tigress known as Sheba, had launched an attack on him.

William Mokoena, a South African man, recently made headlines after he was attacked by a tiger at a local wildlife reserve.

In a viral video, Mokoena recounts the harrowing experience and expresses his thoughts on the tragic incident.

The attack occurred on a Saturday night, when Mokoena was on his way home in Walkerville, south of Johannesburg. He had just left his cousin’s house a short time earlier when the attack happened.

According to Mokoena, the tiger, named Sheba, suddenly lunged at him, leaving him with severe injuries.

Mokoena was traveling along a path that is typically taken by bicycles and pedestrians and cuts across a veld.

In the now-viral video, he described how the animal, which escaped from one of the nearby plots, had attacked him while he was lacing his shoes.

“The experience still feels like a surreal dream and I cannot fully process it yet. However, I am grateful to be alive and I thank God. My main concern now is for the safety of my community, particularly the children who use the route to get to school nearby. I urge authorities to capture the animal as soon as possible, to prevent any further harm.

As he recounts the incident, Mokoena explains that he was simply walking home, holding a portable bluetooth speaker and a phone in his hand. Suddenly, he was violently pushed to the ground by an unknown force. When he looked up, he saw a giant animal with its mouth open, lunging towards his face. He screamed for help, using his hands to protect his face from the tiger’s attack. Despite the overwhelming fear and pain, Mokoena managed to remain calm and focused on the animal’s movements.

His cousin eventually came to his rescue, and the tiger ran away. After the attack, they took him to his cousin’s house, but they could still hear the tiger outside, had killed a dog. Even though they opened the window, they could not see it.

After the attack, William Mokoena had to endure a grueling 12-hour wait for an ambulance to arrive and transport him to the hospital for treatment. His cousin, Andries Mokoena, expressed relief that his cousin had survived but also concern for the safety of the community. “When I heard about the attack, I had no idea it was my cousin who had been affected. I am grateful he is alive, but the incident has left the community living in fear. We are all hoping to see the tiger captured soon, as it is not safe to go outside at night.” The community is now living in fear and hope to see the tiger be captured soon.
