Deborah Yakubu Disrespected Islam, Don’t Blame Her Killers—Imam Ibrahim Maqari

Brahim Maqari, the imam of Abuja’s National Mosque, has defended the killing of Christian female student Deborah Samuel, blaming her for violating Islamic faith’s red lines, The People Gazette reports.

Mr Maqari, although acquitting her killers, warned that those who broke the religion’s red lines would face severe consequences, adding that such behavior would not be condoned.

What he said:

  • “It should be known to everyone that we the Muslims have some red lines beyond which MUST NOT be crossed.
  • The dignity of the Prophet (PBUH) is at the forefront of the red lines.
  • If our grievances are not properly addressed, then we should not be criticized for addressing them ourselves”

The imam is not the only Muslim who has made comments in support of Deborah’s death. MandyNews has seen more than a dozen comments across social media praising the killers.

Anas Mohammad Sani, a government official in Sokoto, also threatened that additional Christians in Nigeria would be killed if they said anything derogatory to their venerated Prophet Muhammad.

What he said:

  • “Muslims don’t take insults against beloved prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in whatever form”

He claims that the Shehu Shagari College of Education student was brutally murdered as a result of her rash comments about Islam.

What he said:

  • “The earlier our Christian brothers and sisters understand this, the better for all of us.
  • May the recklessness of our tongues never drive us to an early grave.”

Deborah Yakubu, a 200-level Home-Economics student convicted of blasphemy, had protested angrily to her department’s WhatsApp group about the flood of religious broadcast messages.

Her complaints enraged her classmates, who stoned her to death and set her lifeless body on fire.

So far, the Sokoto division of the police department has arrested two of the many suspects.
