The best 26-man England squad has been named by Gareth Southgate for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The team was introduced on Thursday afternoon, with the players reporting to camp on Monday morning following the weekend’s home club matches.
Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling are among them, joining the esteemed group of England players who have participated in three World Cups.
Conor Gallagher, James Maddison, and Callum Wilson are among the players Southgate chose, and they represent a mix of youth and experience.
Gallagher does, however, have an Under-17 World Cup winner’s medal from 2017, when Phil Foden was also named player of the tournament, and he will be competing in his first senior major tournament.
With a combined average age of 26 in the 2018 World Cup, England had the second-youngest squad overall. The Three Lions have selected a similarly young team this time around, with a 26.4 average age.
Three goalkeepers, eight defenders, six midfielders, and eight strikers make up the Three Lions manager’s team, however it’s important to note the squad’s versatility because players in each outfield sector can play several roles.
Prior to the players’ arrival on Monday, the England coaching staff will travel to St. George’s Park over the weekend.
Once there, they’ll take a flight to Qatar in time for the Three Lions’ opening Group B match against Iran on Monday, November 21 at the Khalifa International Stadium (kick-off 1pm GMT).
Before their third Group B match against neighboring Wales on Tuesday, November 29, at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, England plays the USA on Friday, November 25, at 7 p.m. at the Al Bayt Stadium (kick-off 7pm).
The opening match of the tournament, between hosts Qatar and Ecuador, is on Sunday, November 20, and the championship game is on Sunday, December 18.
At his news conference at 2:15 p.m., Southgate talked about his team choices. You can watch the press conference here.
