A Nigerian presidential election has sparked allegations of fraud and dissatisfaction among opposition supporters.

Peter Obi, a former governor and the Labour Party’s candidate for the 2023 presidential election, has been supported by a group called the Obidients. They believe the results were rigged in favour of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the candidate for the ruling party.

The Obidients argue that Obi won 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as 25% in two-thirds of the states, which would meet the requirements for victory. Meanwhile, Tinubu won just seven states, while Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won eight states, and Rabiu Kwankwoso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) won two states.

“My People, it’s no longer news that Peter Obi defeated Tinubu with wide margin. This is the Results obtained from IReV Portal:
PDP: 8 States.
APC: 7 States.
NNPP: 2 States.
LP: 19 States + FCT + 25% in 2/3.
Peter Obi MUST be declared the winner & some people must go to jail!”
Obidient Twitter user, NEFERTITI aka @Firstladyship, tweeted.

The Obidients’ allegations of election rigging have gained traction on social media, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over what they see as corruption and a lack of transparency in their country’s electoral process.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been criticized for its handling of the election, particularly for the delay in uploading the results onto the INEC Result Viewing (IREV) portal. While INEC has declared Tinubu the winner of the election, the Obidients’ claims have sparked calls for a more thorough investigation into the validity of the election results.

The situation in Nigeria highlights the ongoing challenges of ensuring self-rule and peaceful elections in many parts of the world. In recent years, accusations of election rigging and manipulation have become increasingly common, leading to widespread distrust in government institutions and contributing to political instability.

It is uncertain at this point what actions will be taken by INEC and other authorities to address the allegations of election rigging. However, the Obidients’ claims have brought renewed attention to the importance of fair and transparent elections in Nigeria and around the world. It is crucial that every vote be counted and that the democratic process be upheld in order to ensure that the voice of the people is truly heard.

As the situation in Nigeria continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this controversy will be resolved. However, what is well-spoken is that the Obidients’ allegations of election rigging have put a spotlight on the need for transparency and peccancy in Nigeria’s electoral process and have reignited debates over the state of democracy in Nigeria and other countries virtually the world.
