Mexico City – On Monday, local authorities in Cancun reported the discovery of four deceased individuals in the city’s hotel zone, close to the beach.
As of now, there is no information regarding the victims’ identities or nationalities. This announcement comes on the heels of an incident last week where a U.S. tourist was shot in the leg in the nearby town of Puerto Morelos.
Initially, three bodies were found near a hotel along Cancun’s Kukulkan Boulevard. Later, authorities discovered a fourth body in the same vicinity.
Quintana Roo state prosecutors have taken two suspects into custody and are investigating the deaths, although the cause has not yet been determined.
The recent shooting of a U.S. tourist in Puerto Morelos is also being investigated.
After being approached and shot by several individuals, the tourist was taken to a hospital in Cancun for treatment. Fortunately, his injuries were not life-threatening.
In response to these events, the U.S. The State Department has issued a travel alert, advising increased caution for those visiting Mexico’s Caribbean beach resorts, including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.
These areas have been troubled by drug-related violence in recent years.
A series of violent incidents have plagued the Caribbean coast, which is vital to Mexico’s tourism industry.
In 2022, two Canadians lost their lives in Playa del Carmen due to feuds between international drug and weapons trafficking gangs.
Additionally, in 2021, two tourists in Tulum were killed after being caught in the crossfire of a shootout involving rival drug dealers. Such incidents raise significant concerns for the safety and security of tourists in the region.
