Art lovers and collectors were left shocked at an exclusive event in Miami when a sculpture by American artist Jeff Koons, worth $42,000, was accidentally dropped and broken by a guest.
The sculpture was one of Koons’ Dog Balloons, which are sculptures shaped like dogs made out of balloons. The incident took place during the opening night of Art Wynwood, a contemporary art fair held annually in Miami, Florida.

The sculpture was reportedly knocked over by an “older lady” who had touched it, according to artist Stephen Gamson who was present at the event. While there was speculation that it might have been part of a performance, it was soon revealed to be an accident. The sculpture broke into small shards and had to be swept up by gallery staff.
Fortunately, the piece was insured, according to Bénédicte Caluch, an art consultant at the Bel-Air Fine Art gallery, which sold the sculpture. The woman responsible for the damage, who was not identified, was reportedly an art collector. Despite the incident, there is still interest in buying the destroyed work, with some collectors seeing value in the piece due to its new story.
Koons’ series of Balloon Dog sculptures are among the most recognizable in contemporary art, and pieces have sold for tens of millions of dollars. The sculptures have been displayed in galleries around the world, and in 2019, Koons made history when his Rabbit sculpture sold at auction for over $91 million, the highest price ever reached for a work by a living artist.
While accidents like this are rare, they serve as a reminder of the importance of respecting the works of art in galleries and museums. Visitors are often reminded not to touch the works, as even the slightest touch can cause damage, particularly to fragile pieces. Despite this, accidents do happen, and insurance can provide some peace of mind for galleries and collectors alike.
In this case, the incident has become a talking point among art enthusiasts, with some even seeing value in the damaged work. While it may be a costly mistake, it has added a unique story to the piece, and may even increase its value over time.
