Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian and Finnish citizen living in Lahti, Finland, was arrested on Thursday by Finnish police in an operation whose details have not been disclosed, Helsingin Sanomat reports.

Ekpa is known for leading a separatist group called the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which has been designated a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government. The group seeks to establish an independent state of Biafra in southeastern Nigeria.

The news of Ekpa’s arrest has attracted attention both in Finland and Nigeria, where he is a controversial figure. The Nigerian government has accused Ekpa and IPOB of carrying out violent attacks against security forces and civilians in the country’s southeastern region. The group’s activities have led to a crackdown by Nigerian authorities, which has in turn drawn international criticism for human rights abuses.

Ekpa’s supporters on social media, on the other hand, view him as a freedom fighter who is fighting for the rights of his people. Already, some of his supporters on Facebook have expressed concern over his arrest and called on the Finnish government to intervene.

The arrest of Ekpa was confirmed by the Finnish police, but they did not release any details about the operation or the reasons for the arrest. The police have also not disclosed the identity of the person arrested, but Ekpa’s supporters have confirmed that he is the one in custody.

The arrest comes at a time of heightened tensions between IPOB and the Nigerian government. The group has been involved in a series of clashes with security forces, which have resulted in the deaths of several people. IPOB has also been accused of carrying out attacks on government buildings and infrastructure.

Ekpa, who was arrested a week later, declared to Finnish media that he heads a rebel faction from his house in Lahti, aiming to create an autonomous Biafra state in Nigeria’s southeast region.

Ekpa has been living in Finland for several years and is known for his involvement in local politics. He is a member of the Coalition Party and serves as a member of the public transport board of the Lahti region. He is also active on social media, where he has a large following and frequently posts about his views on Nigerian politics.

In Nigeria, online responses to Ekpa’s arrest have caused his fans to call for his release on social media. However, many patriotic Nigerians have justified his arrest by claiming that he is a danger to the country’s security.

The Finnish government has not commented on the matter, and the Nigerian embassy in Helsinki has not issued a statement in the matter either.

The arrest of Ekpa is likely to have implications for Finland’s relations with Nigeria. The two countries have a long history of diplomatic relations, and Nigeria is one of Finland’s most important trade partners in Africa.

In recent years, Finland has increased its engagement with Africa, with a particular focus on promoting sustainable development and good governance. The Finnish government has also been active in supporting peace and security initiatives on the continent, including through its participation in international peacekeeping missions.

The arrest of Ekpa is likely to draw attention to the situation in Nigeria and to the issue of separatism more broadly. Nigeria is a diverse country with more than 250 ethnic groups, and there have been calls for greater autonomy or independence from some of these groups.

While the Nigerian government has cracked down on separatist movements, some observers have criticized its heavy-handed approach and called for a more inclusive and dialogue-based approach to addressing the grievances of marginalized communities.
