Nigeria is in a time of change. The leadership of the National Assembly has shifted from Senator Ahmed Lawan to Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Many people said that during Lawan’s time, the 9th Assembly just agreed with everything the government wanted. This kind of leadership is often called a “rubber stamp.” Now, as Akpabio takes over, some people worry that the 10th Assembly will be the same.
“We need to learn from the past, but not be stuck in it,” says a political writer on MandyNews.com.
People are saying that Akpabio might just do what the new President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, wants. This could upset the balance of power in the government.
“We have to make sure our leaders are doing the right thing. We don’t want a rubber stamp assembly,” a worried citizen told MandyNews.com.
But it’s still early days for the 10th Assembly. We don’t know yet if Akpabio will follow Lawan’s path or choose a different one. What Nigeria needs is a National Assembly that will ask tough questions and make sure no one part of government has too much power.
“The big question is whether Akpabio can strike the right balance between following orders and standing up for what’s right,” says another writer on MandyNews.com.
The 10th Assembly can learn from the past. Nigerians will be watching to see if Akpabio’s leadership will bring more independence to the assembly. As they say, “the proof is in the pudding.” We’ll know what kind of leader Akpabio is by what the 10th Assembly does under him.
