FULL TEXT OF PRESS CONFERENCE BY Peter Obi

Having followed the prolonged identity crisis that recently played out in the American Court System and the controversy surrounding the authenticity of the Chicago State University credentials of Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I must confess that I am distressed as a Nigerian.

In addition to the barrage of media frenzy that the matter has triggered at home and abroad, I have had the unwholesome burden of responding to embarrassing questions about Nigeriaโ€™s overall credibility as a nation to privileged audiences & individuals both at home and abroad in different parts of the world where I have traveled lately.

To outsiders, the entire CSU matter, as well as Bola Ahmed Tinubuโ€™s many lingering identity question marks, have further worsened Nigeriaโ€™s less-than-glorious image internationally. Uninformed outsiders now see every other Nigerian as a potential fraudster, certain forger, or identity thief. The controversy is unnecessary just as the implicit global embarrassment could have been avoided.

In my opinion, Chief Bola Tinubu should have saved the nation and himself from this protracted embarrassment & undue anxiety. Even this late in the day, he still owes the nation and the world a simple debt of obligation that only he can discharge. He should re-introduce himself to the nation and the world. He should state his name, nationality, place of birth, parentage, schools, and universities attended, certificates obtained, and other relevant details. This direct personal statement can put to rest the doubts about his identity.

A leader cannot outsource a personal statement about his identity. The personal identity of a leader is paramount to the functions of the office he occupies. It reflects integrity, morality, values, and the rule of law that defines the character of the Nation and its people. His true identity is of grave national and international interest.

The people deserve to know the true identity of their leader. Moreover, the international community must know the true identity of the individual they engage with in Nigeria. Chief Bola Tinubu, having sought the presidency, owes this disclosure to the public. Respect for Nigeria’s esteem within the community of nations makes it essential.

Itโ€™s time to do the right thing.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

Peter Obi
