Tensions between Russia and Ukraine escalate amid potential spring offensive
Russia vows to respond with retaliatory measures
Russian President Vladimir Putin narrowly escapes a drone attack, with Russia vowing to respond as it sees fit.
Early on Wednesday morning, Moscow officials reported that the Kremlin was targeted by Ukrainian drones in an alleged assassination attempt on Russian President Vladimir Putin. This development could significantly escalate tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as Kyiv is anticipated to initiate a spring offensive soon.
Moscow authorities stated that the Russian military’s electronic air defense systems intercepted and shot down two Ukrainian drones, which subsequently crashed into the Kremlin. The alleged attack resulted in no reported injuries.
The Kremlin released a statement affirming its intention to take “retaliatory measures whenever and wherever it sees fit.”
“These actions are viewed as a premeditated terrorist attack and an assassination attempt on the President, executed before Victory Day,” (referring to the May 9 commemoration of the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II.)
“Russia retains the right to implement countermeasures whenever and wherever it deems necessary,” – stated the Kremlin on its website.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s press officer, Serhiy Nikiforov, commented to local media that Kyiv was unaware of “the supposed nocturnal assaults on the Kremlin,” reiterating the nation’s concentration on its own territory. “Ukraine commits all available resources and efforts to liberate its territories, not to invade foreign ones.”
Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the Russian parliament’s lower house, called for “the employment of weapons capable of halting and eradicating the Kyiv terrorist regime” in a Telegram message.
Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of Russia’s Wagner Group, whose mercenary forces have spearheaded the attack on Bakhmut, declared that the Ukrainian counteroffensive had already commenced.
“The adversary has also intensified its activities beyond Ukraine’s historical borders – the Russian Federation,” Prigozhin remarked in a statement.
“We observe the situation in various regions: trains, drones, etc. Consequently, I believe that everything is already underway. When will it intensify? I anticipate this happening in the near future, possibly within days,” he added.
