On March 9, 2023, a tragic car mishap on the Oyo-Ogbomoso road in Nigeria left at least 10 passengers burned beyond recognition.

Around 5.30 a.m., a Mazda and a Toyota Hiace passenger bus crashed near Kilometres 12 Ijawaya. The mishap occurred as the passengers were traveling from Lagos and Nasarawa States.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, Joshua Adekanye, confirmed the incident to journalists in Ibadan.

According to him, the cause of the accident was attributed to speeding and overloading, with the drivers of both buses on a night journey.

The fatalities would have been reduced if the drivers had not been traveling at night, Adekanye said, emphasizing the need for motorists to shun night traveling, speeding, and overloading.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of night journeys, and the importance of taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of passengers.

The accident has left the community in mourning, with many expressing their condolences and sympathy for the families of the victims.

The incident is a tragic reminder of the importance of road safety measures and the need for continuous education and awareness campaigns on safe driving practices.

The FRSC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of road users in the state and has called on drivers to adhere to traffic rules and regulations, including the speed limit and road signs. The agency has also urged passengers to report any dangerous driving behavior to the appropriate authorities.

The impact of the accident has been felt across the state, with many individuals and organizations offering support and assistance to the victims and their families. The state government has also expressed its condolences and has promised to provide support to the families of the victims.

In a statement issued by the state governor’s office, the government expressed its “deep sadness and sympathy” for the victims and their families. The statement emphasized the need for improved road safety measures and urged road users to exercise caution while on the road.

The accident has also sparked discussions on the need for improved road infrastructure and the importance of investing in road safety measures to reduce the incidence of accidents. This is particularly important given the high number of accidents that occur on Nigerian roads, with many resulting in fatalities.
