A viral video shows protesters in Sri Lanka storming the president’s residence.
On Saturday, thousands of protesters broke into the president’s official house in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Public protests have been taking place for months due to the nation’s economic woes.
In a widely shared video, protesters can be seen kicking down the doors of various government structures, including the presidential secretariat and the ministry of finance.
They demand that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa step down. He hadn’t visited the official house since Friday, according to sources at the Defense Ministry, due to security concerns.
Despite the fact that MandyNews.com had reported that the Sri Lankan president had fled as demonstrators invaded his palace.
Police and the military made unsuccessful attempts to prevent the demonstrators from accessing the buildings.
Party leaders have been summoned to an urgent meeting by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to discuss the issue and find a swift solution. He requested that Parliament be called, according to the statement. Wickremesinghe was also moved to a secure area.
Sri Lanka Protesters In Pool
Hundreds of demonstrators, some wearing flags, could be seen swarming the president’s mansion during a Facebook live stream, yelling anti-Rajapaksa chants as they filled the halls and corridors.
The protesters used the official residence’s swimming pool, and videos of it were posted on social media.
Outside the structure, people could be seen wandering the grounds.
The protests resulted in at least 39 injuries, two of which required hospitalization.
