“Snow On The Beach” has been hailed as one of Taylor Swift’s best songs off her latest album, “Midnights,” thus far.
The lyrics address the contradictions of falling in love.
The sweet, spirited song “Snow on the Beach,” the fourth single on Taylor Swift’s new album Midnights, is permeated by a bizarre rhythm.
The song’s dreamy, almost eerie quality is intentional because it captures a once-in-a-lifetime emotion, according to Swift, who described it as “that cataclysmic, fated moment where you realize someone feels exactly the same way that you feel at the same moment” in an Instagram video posted before the album’s release on October 21.
Swift stated that she was honored to reveal on October 7 that she would be collaborating with singer Lana Del Rey on the song because she has long been a fan.
Del Rey’s contribution to “Snow on the Beach” is understated—some might even say too understated—but her angelic voice helps to convey Swift’s mood:
“The song is about falling in love with someone at the same time as they’re falling in love with you,” Swift said.
“…And you’re kind of looking around going, ‘Wait is this real? Is this a dream? Is this for real? Is this really happening?’
Kind of like it would be if you were to see snow falling on a beach.”
The lyrics to “Snow on the Beach” are purposefully ambiguous and open to interpretation, with the exception of the obvious reference to Janet Jackson in the line “I’m all for you like Janet.”
Even yet, it wouldn’t be wrong to believe that Swift, who has been dating actor Joe Alwyn for six years, is referring to her own “cataclysmic, fated moment.”
A few of the songs on Midnights are among many other songs she’s composed that make references to her concerns and aspirations for the stability of their relationship.
