A video has emerged showing a teacher in Cameroon severely flogging students for arriving late to school, sparking outrage and protests from the students who say that corporal punishment is still being used in schools despite being illegal.

The incident occurred at an institution in Yaounde, and the video captured the teacher hitting the students with a pipe. Parents have taken to social media to denounce the teacher’s actions, and some learners have expressed their frustration at the use of corporal punishment in schools.

African Stringers, a news blog, visited the school and spoke to students who said that the use of corporal punishment had been ongoing for quite some time. Students reported that they were given strokes with a pipe each time they arrived late to school and that the teacher did not bother to find out the reason for their tardiness.

On September 26th, some learners decided to capture the teacher on video while he was beating latecomers at the gate. They wanted to bring attention to the issue and to demand that the Ministry of Secondary Education take action against the teacher. They know that corporal punishment is unacceptable in schools and are aware of their rights.

The video has garnered attention from officials at the Ministry of Secondary Education, who have promised to investigate the matter and take disciplinary action if necessary.

Parents have expressed mixed opinions, with some believing that the school should have a punishment system in place but not corporal punishment, while others still support the use of physical discipline.

Students hope that the incident will lead to a change in the system and that corporal punishment will be eradicated from schools in Cameroon.

Please note that this incident, which is currently going viral across various social media platforms in Africa, took place in 2022.
