The Nigerian political scene has taken a dramatic turn as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have filed a lawsuit to stop the Labour Party (LP) and the Peopleโ€™s Democratic Party (PDP) from interfering with the collation and announcement of the results of the presidential election held on February 25, 2023.

The suit, which was filed before the Federal High Court in Kano and marked FHC/KN/CS/43/2023, has listed the Action Alliance and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants, with Kashim Shettima, the Vice Presidential candidate of the APC, also joining as a plaintiff.

In a motion on notice filed alongside the originating summons, the plaintiffs have asked the court to make an order restraining the defendants from stopping the collation and announcement of the results. They argue that the damages incurred by any interference would not be enough to compensate for the injury that may be caused to the plaintiffs.

The filing of this lawsuit is a clear indication of the high stakes in the presidential election and the level of mistrust between the two main political parties, the APC and the PDP. The LP, which is a minor player in the election, has found itself caught up in the crossfire.

The outcome of this legal battle is critical as it could determine the direction of Nigeria’s future. The country has been grappling with economic, security, and social challenges, and the choice of the next president could have a significant impact on the country’s future trajectory.

The filing of this lawsuit has elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some have praised the APC and Tinubu for taking a proactive step to protect their interests, others have criticized them for attempting to circumvent the electoral process.

The PDP, on the other hand, has described the lawsuit as an act of desperation by the APC, noting that it is a sign that they are losing ground in the presidential race. They have called on their supporters to remain calm and vigilant, promising to defend their rights to the very end.

The role of the court in this legal battle is critical. The judiciary is expected to be impartial and to ensure that justice is served. The credibility of the judiciary is at stake, and it is essential that the court handles the matter with the utmost professionalism and impartiality.
