ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal High Court in Abuja, led by Justice Binta Nyako, has postponed the decision on the bail application and trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to March 19th and 20th, 2024.

Kanu’s legal team requested his release on bail due to concerns about his health. However, the prosecution opposed this request, arguing that Kanu might not adhere to the bail conditions based on his past actions.

The defense countered this argument by stating that Kanu’s previous failure to comply with bail conditions was not intentional. They referred to an incident on September 14, 2017, when Nigerian military forces allegedly attacked Kanu’s home, leading to the deaths of several people, including Kanu’s cousin. This incident, according to the defense, forced Kanu into a situation that resulted in him not meeting his bail conditions.

It’s noteworthy that Kanu has been held in solitary confinement for over three years since his extradition from Kenya, a situation that has raised concerns among human rights observers.

Additionally, Justice Nyako instructed Kanu to stop wearing his usual Fendi clothing to court appearances. The case, which has garnered significant attention, will continue in March when the court reconvenes to decide on Kanu’s bail and trial.
