President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his condemnation of the recent killing of Oyibo Chukwu, the senatorial candidate for Enugu East under the Labour Party (LP).

Mr Chukwu was reportedly attacked by gunmen who also killed his aide, while several others were injured. In a statement issued by presidential aide Femi Adesina, President Buhari described the act as heinous, noting that the perpetrators have no respect for human life.

The President also reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the upcoming election is devoid of violence and rancor, while reminding all political actors that the choice of the electorate is what ultimately counts. He urged all eligible Nigerians to boldly exercise their civic rights without fear of intimidation.

Furthermore, President Buhari has directed security agencies to track down those responsible for the killings and bring them to justice. He also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and the Labour Party. The President prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and comfort for those who mourn.

The killing of Oyibo Chukwu has generated widespread condemnation from various quarters, with many calling for justice to be served. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has described the incident as a sad reminder of the state of insecurity in the country, while the Labour Party has also expressed its shock and sadness at the loss of their candidate.

The incident is another in a series of violent attacks on politicians and political aspirants in Nigeria, especially as the country prepares for the 2023 general elections. It underscores the need for the government to do more to address the security challenges facing the country and ensure that citizens are safe and able to participate in the democratic process without fear.
