CBN Governor Accused of Funding Unknown Gunmen, IPOB Members

CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele accused of funding unknown gunmen, IPOB members by Nigerian State Security Service (SSS)

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been accused of funding “unknown gunmen” and members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), according to newly obtained court documents from the State Security Service (SSS) by PREMIUM TIMES.

The documents provide, for the first time, the details behind the terrorism financing allegations that were levelled against Mr. Emefiele last December.

IPOB is a separatist organization that calls for the secession of the five Igbo-dominated states in South-east Nigeria and parts of neighbouring states as an independent Biafran nation. The group has been blamed for acts of violence in the South-east region in recent years and has been declared a terrorist organization by a court since September 2017.

In December, the SSS attempted to obtain an order from the Federal High Court in Abuja for the arrest of Mr. Emefiele over a wide range of allegations, including financing terrorism.

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, declined to grant the application due to an irregularity in the procedure adopted by the SSS in its application.

Eight weeks later, the court documents providing the details of the SSS’s allegations against the CBN governor have now been obtained by PREMIUM TIMES.

The SSS accused Mr. Emefiele of sabotaging the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, financing terrorism, aiding and abetting terrorism, and committing other economic crimes that undermine Nigeria’s national security.

The agency also specifically accused Mr. Emefiele of mismanaging the Nigeria Social Investment Programme (NISRAL) and the Anchor Borrowers Scheme. These accusations paint a picture of serious wrongdoing that demands further investigation.

The importance of the CBN governor to the stability of the Nigerian economy cannot be overstated, and these allegations raise serious questions about the management of the central bank.

The Nigerian people and the international community deserve to know the truth about these allegations, and a thorough investigation should be conducted to ensure the integrity of the central bank and the stability of the Nigerian economy.

It is essential to note that these are serious accusations that have not yet been proven in court. It is the responsibility of the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate these allegations and to bring any evidence of wrongdoing to light.

The CBN governor has a right to due process and a fair hearing, and it is important to allow the judicial process to run its course before drawing any conclusions.

Stay tuned for further updates as more information becomes available.
