EKITI, NIGERIA – Activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi has been granted bail by the Ekiti State High Court after being held in custody over a defamation case. The court set bail at ₦50 million, with a surety of the same amount. The surety must also own a landed property in the state.

Farotimi’s arrest stemmed from a lawsuit filed by renowned legal icon Chief Afe Babalola, SAN. The 95-year-old lawyer accused Farotimi of defaming him in a book titled Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.

The case has sparked public outrage across the country, with protests from civil society groups and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). Many believe the arrest is a direct attack on free speech and an attempt to silence criticism.

“He’s only saying what many Nigerians feel but are too scared to say. Arresting him won’t solve the real problems in our justice system,” said one supporter outside the court.

Farotimi, known for his sharp criticism of Nigeria’s leadership and judicial system, has gained a reputation for speaking truth to power. His recent arrest has only strengthened calls for reform in the country’s criminal justice system.

The case has been adjourned to January 29, 2025. Meanwhile, activists and lawyers are rallying for broader reforms to protect citizens’ right to express themselves without fear of intimidation or legal battles.

This story continues to unfold as Nigerians watch closely, waiting to see what comes next in this high-profile case.
