Augustine Eguavoen has resigned as coach of the Nigeria Super Eagles team after he failed to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
The 56-year-old has been in charge of Nigeria national football team since his appointment on December 12, 2021, following the departure of Gernot Rohr, with Eguavoen led Nigeria to an agonizing round-of-16 exit with a defeat to Tunisia.
Eguavoen, who formerly served as the head coach of Enyimba International in Aba, has returned to his position as Technical Director.
According to Brila fm, Eguavoen, who began his coaching career with Sliema Wanderers in Malta, has filed a letter of resignation to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) explaining his decision.
After a 1-1 draw, Augustine Eguavoen’s Super Eagles were unable to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Ghana’s Black Star qualified with an away goal, which led to his resignation.
The Edo-born Eguavoen, who was on-field captain when the Super Eagles won the 1994 AFCON, was handed a two-year contract for the Super Eagles job before the first leg of the World Cup play-off against Ghana.
